nha / ho...
There are two kinds of family in Vietnamese society; nha, which is the immediate family, and ho, the extended family. Nha, is not just a description of 'family', but implies the duties and obligations of being a family member. This means what you do, your job, and how you behave, all reflect back on the family.
For the immediate family (nha) there are nine distinct generations that are commemorated through rituals and celebrations, thus ensuring the continuity of the clan.
Showing respect… Vietnamese will begin a sentence with thua which means 'please', added before the first name of the person being spoken to, and bow their heads.
