Kava ('ava)...
Kava or kava'ava means both ceremony and problem. It also means plant and drink.
In Samoan, the word for ceremony and problem is the same - a ceremony means exchanging presents (often a pig or a cow) that are expensive; but the exchange of gifts affirms the unity of the extended family.
'We all belong together and are in debt to each other,' Simon, Samoan native studying in New Zealand.
Fa'aSamoa means the Samoan way of life, the traditional way of doing things. Traditionally a family means extended family, maybe 20 - 30 members, over several generations.
