inyangamugayo...

Translation: respected person committed to honesty, integrity and impartiality

There are approximately 250,000 inyangamugayo, in Rwanda, respected persons who preside over traditional style tribunals called Gacaca.

Previously, inyangamugayo were the village elders who presided over local affairs to resolve conflicts and mediate solutions.

Since the 1994 Rwandan genocide the Gacaca courts have presided over cases that resulted in the deaths of an estimated million citizens.

The Gacaca is a grass roots system based on acknowledging the integrity and moral authority of the inyangamugayo.

Since the 1990s, Rwanda has more women members of parliament than any other country (52% in 2009; Norway is next with 46%).
