uMunthu...

uMunthu means group, kinship, belonging. It means that you are who you are because of others. Your value as a person is in being part of a community. In this respect uMunthu ties in with the concept of ubuntu (see South Africa).

"uMunthu encourages cooperation and not competition, character takes priority to achievement and embraces tolerance over condemnation," Stewart Lane, In God Loves Africans to be Africans.

"uMunthu addresses the whole person. It is not just concerned with the head knowledge but also includes practical (hand) and character (heart) knowledge." Gerard Chigona
"The purpose of life is realised only in a framework of togetherness. UMunthu encourages us to value others because in doing so we value ourselves." Malawian writer Harvey Sindima.

"Western philosophy defines human identity in individualistic terms: 'I think, therefore I am'. UMunthu on the other hand says, 'I am because you are, and because you are, therefore, I am." African-born philosopher, John Mbiti

"Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu" 'A person is a person through persons.' Malawian aphorism.
